Jarvis Cocker - “Discosong (Pilooski Edit)”
Jarvis Cocker is such a sleazebag, he fits in perfectly into the bad news bacchanal Pilooski conjures up, full of red light and encrusted carpeting that releases little puffs of bad coke with every footfall. It’s a sound you’re surprised not to have heard before.
Vampire Weekend - “Giving Up the Gun”
The RZA, Joe Jonas, what appears to be Daft Punk, Jake Gyllenhall in his greatest performance ever, Lil John, and the first Vampire Weekend song it’s impossible to deny, no matter how much you resent them.
Muscles - “Hey Muscles, I Love You”’
“Last night I had a terrible dream, it was 12 AM and the music disappeared.”
Muscles is basically Andrew WK, if Andrew WK were Australian, took lots and lots and lots of E, and made dance music. What’s not to love?
Lindstrom and Christabelle - “High & Low”
I don’t mention this track in my review of their album Real Life is No Cool on Slant Magazine, but it’s really one of the highlights. The lyric is one of the more sensical and straightforward (it helps that it’s simple) and I think the song overall is a great example of the melodic focus of the record. Nice muted guitar solo, too. Definitely recommended.
Massive Attack - “Paradise Circus” (Gui Boratto Remix)
I haven’t been very impressed by the most recent work of Massive Attack or Gui Boratto, but it’s probably not much of a stretch for me to say that they are my favorite electronic artists of the 90s and the 00s, respectively. So the fact that they’ve now collaborated is basically reason enough for nerdgasm. The fact that this remix is seriously fire - full of sultry strutting and noir guitar, oozing sex and duplicity - feels like a beautiful gift.
