Ride - “Vapour Trail” (a fairly faithful live version. download the record though).
I have yet to meet someone who loves this song as much as I love it. It’s definitely the greatest song of the shoegaze era from my perspective (dude, fuck MBV). I still vividly remember the first time I heard it - after purchasing it from the Amoeba Records in Hollywood, I was driving back to San Diego through Orange County on the 5. Through the San Juan Capistrano region and south to Camp Pendleton, the freeway goes over a long set of rolling hills. As I cruised through those variations, I played this song on repeat, and felt like I was melting. The liquid metal guitar in the second two-thirds of the song is probably my favorite sound in all of pop music.
